Well, a new year is finally upon us! What a great time we had in 2011. Lots of time spent outdoors with wonderful family and friends. Even caught a few fish and got some meat on the ground!
Below are a few pictures of what transpired in 2011. I look forward to bringing you more interesting outdoor information, in the year to come!
Let’s face it. We can’t hunt or fish as much as we’d like.
All to often, we are stuck working at home, or making a living to enjoy our outdoor passion. Recently, I came upon a product that is helpful for everyday lives. The Leatherman Style CS Pocket Knife, is a great little tool to have in your pocket, on a daily basis.
The Leatherman Style CS has a number of features that are helpful:
1) Carabiner – Great for attaching to your belt loop, briefcase, or opening that beer at 5 o’ clock!
2) Knife – The knife that comes on the Leatherman Style CS is very sharp, will be perfect for opening boxes, or cutting anything you need on a daily basis.
3) Scissors – I’ve seen the scissors on other multitools…..these scissors are superior, I promise.
4) Nail File / Screwdriver – This tool is small, and great for working on smaller type screws, on electronics or small hand tools. The nail file speaks for itself!
5) Tweezers – Again, ideally you’ll never have to use them – but shit happens! Nice to have if some

“We know that safety may not be the first thought on our minds as we go out to camp, hike, fish, or boat this holiday weekend,” said ODNR Director David Mustine. “Our goal is to provide Ohioans with outdoor opportunities. Sobering facts
According to Safe Kids USA, childhood drowning and near-drowning can happen in a matter of seconds, typically occurring when a child is left unattended or during a brief lapse in supervision.
The solution: Never leave a child unattended in or around water.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that approximately 371 deaths occur from heat-related illnesses each year.
The solution: Drink plenty of water; wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest time of the day.
A U.S. Coast Guard report showed 672 people died from boating related accidents in 2010 – a decrease of nearly 9 percent from 2009. However, approximately 88 percent of drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket.
The solution: Always wear a lifejacket – make sure those on children are properly fitted and secured.
The good news is there are easy steps everyone can take that will help ensure summer days spent in the outdoors are as safe as they are fun:
Check the forecast and have a plan if severe weather strikes
Let someone know where you are going, when you leave, and when you plan to return
Take an adequate supply of water and carry a cell phone for emergencies
Be courteous to your fellow outdoors enthusiasts
Follow posted rules and regulations

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – It was the end to the Memorial Day weekend when a 32-foot motorboat with four persons aboard pulled up to the fuel dock. Moments later, after filling up, an explosion ripped through the boat – literally separating it into clamshell-like halves. In an instant a 25-year old woman was dead. All of the boat’s remaining four occupants as well as a fuel dock attendant were hospitalized.
Saddest of all, the accident may have been preventable. A newspaper reported that investigators found that the recently purchased used boat, which was being refueled by its new owner for the first time, may have had a fuel system gasket “give way,” or fail, which allowed gasoline fumes to escape and accumulate below decks. While the owner had properly turned the engine compartment blower on – a required procedure anytime a boat is refueled – not enough of the explosive fumes had been cleared before an engine backfire ignited the blast.
A simple sniff test may have prevented the tragedy, says Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS). “While it appears the owner did the right thing by having the blower on to safely remove any fumes from the engine compartment area, he may not have performed the “sniff” test – lifting the engine compartment hatch in an attempt to smell any lingering gasoline fumes,” said Director of Damage Avoidance Bob Adriance. “Unlike a car, boats have fuel tanks and engines located in enclosed spaces which don’t allow gasoline vapors to escape. This accident shows how important it is do a sniff test every time a boat is refueled.”
BoatUS has these six refueling safety tips:
Always remove passengers from the boat, and reboard only after refueling is complete and the engine(s) restarted.
Engine should be turned off and do not operate any electrical switches, including the ignition.
Keep all doors, ports and hatches closed, and only open them when refueling is complete.
To prevent unintentional sparking, hold hose nozzle firmly against fuel fill (and not a rod holder, water tank fill or holding tank, which happens more often than you think). Also don’t overfill.
After refueling, ensure engine compartment blower runs for at least four minutes. This may delay others waiting to fill up, but it’s worth the wait.
A quick sniff test takes only a few seconds and is the most effective method for detecting fuel leaks. Always open the engine bay hatch (if boat is equipped) and smell the bilge area as well as any closed compartments or interior spaces.
