Cody Altizer Interview – Bowhunting.com Junior Editor

Today, we have a special interview with Bowhunting.Com Junior Editor, Cody Altizer. He’s an outdoor freak who lives for bowhunting whitetails. Cody is an up-and-comer in the deer hunting community, and has a great appreciation and perspective when it comes to capturing the outdoors with camera equipment.

Personal

OF – You’re from Virginia. How was your hunting situation out there?

Cody Altizer – I am fortunate enough to have 260 acres that I am able to hunt whenever I feel like.  That’s a luxury that not many people enjoy so I am very thankful.  Bowhunting for whitetails in Virginia is a lot like bowhunting anywhere in the country.  You have to put your time in, work hard and get lucky!

OF – How did you get started with Bowhunting.Com?

Cody Altizer – The typical American Dream story!  I used to write for a small Virginia based hunting website and maintained my own blog a few years back.  I would share my articles and blog posts in the Bowhunting.com forums looking for feedback and constructive criticism on how to improve my writing.  Well, one day I got a message from Hunting Network Senior Editor Mike Willand, gauging my interest level for a new website Todd Graf was working on, Bowhunting.com.  I jumped at the opportunity, drove to Chicago last summer for the Get Together and before I knew it, was hard at working at the Bowhunting.com Office!

OF – I hear you recently moved down South. Was that because Justin Zarr kept making you feel uncomfortable with the constant winking? Or was it for more for media schooling?

Cody Altizer – Justin does a lot of things, and I learned more from him during my time up there than he knows, but you will never catch him winking at other guys!  But my move down South was based solely on two reasons, live with my brother for one final year before he gets married, and get my Business- Marketing degree.  So far it’s working out great!  Although, the deer in North Carolina are a lot smaller than Illinois!

OF – With the recent move, how has it changed your relationship and duties with Bowhunting.Com?

Cody Altizer – Before I moved back home from Chicago I was bumped up to the Junior Editor of Bowhunting.com, so I have been given more responsibility and duties that I can do from home.  I miss it like crazy up there though!  I learned so much from Todd and Justin about hunting, business, how to carry myself and how to be successful that I contemplate a move back up there all the time.  I am more than excited about what my future with Todd, Justin and Bowhunting.com!

OF – Because I facebook stalked you like a 14 year old girl, I can see that you’re not a stranger to the basketball gym. Tell us a little bit about that! When’d you play? Where? Favorite team? College hoops fan?

Cody Altizer – Basketball is just as big a part of my life as bowhunting, almost.  My dad and brother taught me the game and I played it at a very high level all the way through high school until the passion that is bowhunting for whitetails completely engulfed me.  My claim to fame in basketball is that I could (and still can, on a good day) do a 360 degree dunk- even though I am just 6 feet tall!  Pursuing a career in the hunting industry has proven to be the right decision, but I miss competing and the time away from the court.

OF – Favorite Flick?

Cody Altizer – The Dark Knight – One of film’s greatest tragedies is Heath Ledger’s death.

OF – Do you have a lady friend?

Cody Altizer – No lady friend for me right now, they are too much trouble and too expensive at my age!  I will tell you what though, Willie, when you find an attractive young woman that enjoys bowhunting, photography and video like I do, feel free to give her my contact info!

Deer Hunting

OF – How’s your deer season looking this upcoming Fall?

Cody Altizer – As of right now, it looks fantastic!  My food plots in Virginia are doing extraordinarily well, and I feel like they will pay off big time for me this fall.  The key to successfully bowhunting my property in Virginia is having a consistent food source throughout the fall, and for the first time ever, I think that will be the case this season.  My goal is to shoot a 3 year old buck before November 1st this year in Virginia, so I can’t wait until the season opens!  Other than that, I am going to be making a return trip to Illinois this fall and hunt and film for a week or so with Justin and Mike;  I am hoping to put down another Illinois buck and have a lot of doing it on that trip!

OF – Where did you hunt this past Fall, being new to the Land of Lincoln?

Cody Altizer – I was fortunate enough to hunt three different locations this past fall in Illinois.  I hunted in McHenry and Boone Counties outside of Chicago, and harvested a mature doe in McHenry County opening weekend on film.  But my favorite spot was hunting Justin’s lease in Pike and Brown Counties.  I shot my first buck with a bow on the Pike County side of his lease Halloween Weekend while filming myself!  I’ll never forget that trip! See Cody’s entire hunt on film, here.

OF – Do you hunt other game too, or are you just a whitetail junkie?

Cody Altizer – I live and breathe for whitetails!  Every Spring I say I am going to get into turkey hunting, and every Spring I spend more and more time working food plots and doing other habit management projects to help my whitetail hunting in the fall.  Sooner or later, I honestly believe I will get bit by the turkey hunting bug, but it’s all whitetails for me right now.

OF – What’s your favorite piece of hunting gear?

Cody Altizer – I would be lying if I told you I had a SINGLE favorite piece of hunting gear, because there are just too many products I rely on and trust.  That being said, I feel like my Mathews Z7 Xtreme equipped with an NAP Apache Arrow Rest and broadhead and a Lone Wolf Assault and Lone Wolf Climbing Sticks give me the best chance to be successful in the field.  Lone Wolf and NAP simply make products that make hunters more efficient and stealthy in the woods, and the new Z7 family of bows from Mathews is incredible.  You can’t go wrong with equipment.

Photography / Video

OF – Canon or Sony?

Cody Altizer – Canon for stills, Sony for video.

OF – What’s your favorite picture you’ve taken?

Cody Altizer – I have a handful of images that I am very proud of, but if I had to narrow it down to just one capture, it would be of a shot I got several years ago of some daffodils facing a wooden cross.  It’s a unique shot because when the sun sets, it sets behind the cross and the flowers face the cross at sunset.  I call the image “Even Nature Follows Christ.”

OF – What’s your current video and photo setup?

Cody Altizer – For photos, I shoot with a Canon 7D and 24-105mm f/4 L series Wide Angle lens- love that thing!  I actually use the 7D for the majority of my filming now as well, but when filming hunts I use a Canon HF S20 HD Camcorder with Azden shotgun mic and Audio-Techica wireless mics mounted to the Muddy Outdoor Tree Arm.

OF – How long have you been into photography and video?

Cody Altizer – I’ve loved photography and video ever since I can remember.  I just enjoy sharing with others the world how I see it.  The world looks different to all of us, and if I can share with others what I see every day and how I see it, then maybe I can impact others on a very unique level that’s possible only through photo and film.

Thanks so much Cody for taking the time to do this interview, and share with us a glimpse of what you’re all about. We look forward to catching up with you during the hunting season, best of luck!

Jim Ryser Midwest Whitetail Interview Part 1

Jim Ryser Interview – Music Composer for MidwestWhitetail TV and MidwestWhitetail.com

For those of you that follow Midwest Whitetail TV and MidwestWhitetail.com – you probably are aware that Jim Ryser has been creating music for them, the last couple of years. In this blog Bill Winke says “I’m guessing Jim inspires everyone he meets”. From my recent dealings with him – I can certainly agree. Jim seems like a fun loving and caring dude who just loves the outdoors. This guy has an interesting life story, and seems to fit right in with deer hunters across the country. We caught up with Jim and asked him a few questions about his personal life, hunting, his music career, and working with the great folks at MidwestWhitetail.com. In Part One of this Two Part Series, Jim will address the Hunting and Musical Parts of his life with us! Tune in tomorrow for Part Two – his personal life and MidwestWhitetail.Com.

Hunting

OF – How long have you been hunting and enjoying the outdoors? How’d you get started?

JR – I actually got started when I was 14 years old.  My dad’s buddy Arnie was a WWII hero and he was also a gun nut.  He had a Browning Sweet Sixteen (as do I now), and he got me with the hunting bug when he took my dad and I hunting  for grouse in upstate New York.  He gave me my first .22 and I killed a woodchuck with it.  I took pictures and felt pretty manly but when I went to bury it I cried.  I still have that type of respect for the animals I hunt.  If I lose that I will quit hunting.  Arnie also had an Ithaca Deerslayer (I also own one!) that I killed my first deer with.

OF – Where do you do most of your hunting?

JR – I have a lease here in Indiana.  A very dear friend owns a nice place and I take care of it the best I can, give him some cash, and I have 140 acres to call my own.

OF – Do you prefer to deer or turkey hunt?

JR – That depends on when you ask me.  When it is turkey season I cannot fathom liking anything better; when it’s deer season I cannot fathom liking anything better!

OF – Tell us a little about your camera setup – what kind of video equipment are you using?

JR – Like you, I have the Sony AX 2000.  Heaven.  No tape. I think I have a 701 fliud head by Manfrotto, and a very light carbon Manfrotto tripod.  Since I am the music guy and am picky about sound, I use a shotgun mic as well, a Sony ECM-678/9X. I prefer that over wireless so I have less to think about when hunting or filming.    Got it last year and my stuff is not half bad.  I actually used it at my job for videos that have been seen by 15,000 people for dealing with violent and threatening patients.  I work in a large hospital system in Indiana and my licenses to practice are in mental health and addictions.

OF – I’ve seen your Frigid Forage video you made. What will you be planting this for this coming year?

JR – I already have Monster Magnet down.  I will go back to the Autumn Quick plot and beans.  Both work great on keeping them healthy after season’s end.

Music

OF – I understand that you used to play with John Mellencamp. Can you tell us a little bit about that?

JR – I lived in Indiana for quite some time and as things go, connected with John in the early 80′s.  His dad co-managed me along with Champion Entertainment, and I signed a deal with Arista Records under the legendary Clive Davis in 1988.  The CD produced a minor hit song in 1990 called “Same Old Look” that paid for my education and then some!  I continue to play on John’s stuff only not so much in the past 5 years.  He was very good to me and I have great memories of working with him and his amazing band.  His band plays on a lot of my CDs.

OF – On average, how long does it take for you to create a song from start to finish?

JR – Depends.  My latest and best song was written in Scott Prucha’s bathroom after our turkey hunt this year.  Yep, droppin’ a deuce and writing songs!  Scott is on prostate for midwest whitetails as you know!  Anyway, I wrote that very quickly.  Scott inspired it…Others simmer for years and then pop out, like the one I am doing now.  It is a violin “anthem” I am going to put on my next CD.

OF – What is your favorite musical instrument to play?

JR – Right now my keyboard/piano. But mostly I love all aspects of guitar – from acoustic to electric to lead.  My favorite all time sound is the Hammond B3, and I have one and love it.

OF – What do you consider your greatest musical accomplishment?

JR – Singly, singing the National Anthem at the Brickyard 400 here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2002.  Right now it is honestly the stuff I do for Bill and the gang, because it has brought me an incredible amount of joy and satisfaction.  Bill and I were working on next year’s TV theme for weeks, emailing mixes back and forth, and when it was done we both knew it…

OF – What kind of music to you listen to? Do you have a favorite band?

JR – I like Country, which is relatively new for me.  Contemporary Country mind you – the old stuff is not my style.  Most “Country” folks call what is hip today rock and roll!  But it is very similar to the pop of the late 80′s (not the hair band stuff!).  I also LOVE Pink Floyd.  Always have, always will.  Heaven.

OF – What kind of musical equipment do you use in regards to audio, guitar, etc?

JR - Everything you hear is me, albeit the drums are samples from my keyboard.  I have a Yamaha XF Motif, their top of the line workstation, and that has some incredible sounding stuff on it.  I play drums with Kenny Aronoff in mind; he is one of the premier rock and roll drummers in the industry today and a very good friend.  He has always been my drum programming inspiration and when he says, “Yeah baby!” I know I have it.  I love playing new intruments to me – the dobro recently, the mandolin, violin I have always played, and of course the guitars – love to play the bass as well!

OF – Do you have a favorite piece that you’ve written?

JR – Probably a song called “Home” that I wrote some of at the tail end of my addiction and finished three months into sobriety.  I finished it 12 years ago, the same length time I have been sober.  I have chronic pain and got hooked on pain pills. (OF Note: Check back tomorrow for more on this stage of Mr. Ryser’s life)

BIG Thank you Jim for taking the time to go into such depth with us! We wish you the best of luck, this Fall!

Todd Pringnitz Cribs – White Knuckle Productions HQ

Ok, ok. I know what you’re thinking, and the answer is yes – I do have a small man crush on Todd Pringnitz and the White Knuckle Production Crew. These guys are just the real deal, in my opinion. They are no BS deer hunters, that deal with controversy and idiot trespassers just like the rest of us. Whitetails Inc is a great way to see that – It ain’t always pretty – but it’s always deer hunting. Again, very stoked to get my paws on the new Wicked Tree Gear – Wicked Tough Handsaw that Todd is putting out from yet another one of his companies, Wicked Tree Gear.

Anyway,  I digress. I got the chance when I was at the 20110 White Knuckle Productions Video School to take a minute and tour Todd Pringnitz’s house in Iowa. He shows us around, and we got a sneak peak of where Todd works, keeps his world record turkey, parks his truck, and gets sleep! So take a gander at this video because it’s destined to be the best piece of video you watch today!

StarrFlight FOB Review – Starrflight Archery

Aaron Constantine was kind enough to do this review on the Starrflight FOB’s. He did a great job, and we wish him the best of luck this coming Fall!

I actually came a cross these Starrflight FOBs by accident. I was trying to do some research on a different product, but you all know with the power of the internet one click you could be in the USA and in the very next click you may be in Japan. Don’t worry… this product is made in America, but its just amazing how you stumble across things while your looking for something completely different.

As I mentioned, I was looking for a different product when I happen to find all this information and web sites leading to something called a FOB. If you’re like I was, you are now thinking what the ‘H’ ‘E’ ‘Double Hockey Sticks’ is a FOB? With a couple more clicks of the mouse I learned that FOB stood for Fletching Only Better. Ok, something to do with bow hunting obviously…I was interested! I ended up on their web site starrflight.com and did some more reading and research. The wheels started turning. After spending a fair amount of time on the website I turned to my trusty friend youtube.com, and typed in FOB. I was amazed to find that others had already been using something that was brand new to me and something that I had never even heard of. Watching video after video I became very curious and interested in this product. So I picked up the phone and called. A man by the name of Paul answered. I soon found out that Paul was the inventor of the product. After asking some questions, I told him that I didn’t think I was interested yet, more or less just curious about his product. I told him that I would call him back if I was ever interested in ordering these FOBs.

Justin Zarr – Bowhunting.Com Interview

Today, it is my pleasure to bring you one of the many incredible interviews that we have coming up. Justin Zarr is an irreplaceable part to The Hunting Network and Bowhunting.Com’s everyday team. Not only does Justin know how to put some big deer on the ground, he also seems like just a good dude who likes to have fun in the outdoors. Not to mention he can grow a heck of a mustache! We caught up with Justin and asked him some questions about his personal life, Bowhunting.Com, his upcoming season and The Hunting Network. Read on – pretty interesting stuff!

Personal

OF – First and foremost – tell us about your mustache, and when we can expect to see it again?

JZ - “Rodney” will be reappearing this November.  In fact – most of the Bowhunting.com Staff will be sporting mustaches in an effort to raise money for Children’s Memorial Hospital.

OF – As one of the many people who know you through Bowhunting.com and Huntingnet.com web forums – I know you’ve gotten married in the last couple of years. How has that been? Where did you mean this poor girl?

JZ – So far so good!  Somehow I conned my wife, Amy, into thinking that marrying me was a good idea.  She didn’t know what she was in for! We actually met back in late 2001 at the Cubby Bear – a bar in downtown Chicago.  5 years later we finally got around to dating and then got married in 2008.  My how the time flies.

OF – You work and help with Todd Graf – the king of The Hunting Network and some of the greatest hunting websites in the world. What have you learned from him, and how is your relationship? Do you suspect he jealous of your mustache? Continue Reading →
